Celebrating 50 Years in Business

VLMK Engineering + Design began with two entrepreneurial engineers staking a claim in Portland’s consulting services industry with two straightforward beliefs: the simplest solutions were often the best ones and never compromise on quality, value, and integrity.

This year, VLMK Engineering + Design turns 50. Over the course of the years, VLMK has grown from two passionate engineers into a regional leader in the professional services industry. Since 1971, VLMK has grown to 39 employees committed to serving over 350 private and public clients in 34 states. VLMK started as a structural engineering firm and expanded to include civil engineering services and a broader range of planning and design services for industrial site and building projects. Alongside our partners in 2020, we’ve designed more than 775 projects in multi-family, retail, office, industrial, education/institution, healthcare facilities, and more. To know how we got here, you need to know how it all started.

Over the next several months, we will be sharing highlights from the past five decades, including stories about our company name and the various logos, who started the firm, the projects we have worked on, how we have weathered economic disruptions, and how our company has evolved. Through the years, VLMK has advanced as a company through the addition of like-minded people who reflect our core values. Our shared culture relies heavily on us respecting the original founders’ approach to the built environment. Their legacy is very much alive and kicking, and it ties us all together. We are therefore proud to share our 50 years of history with you.
